A page was turned in world history when Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected to the presidency of Iceland in 1980 – the first woman in the world to be democratically elected as a head of state.

President Vigdís' election caused a sensation around the world, and provided an important boost to the cause of gender equality in Iceland. She served as president for four terms – 16 years – a refined and cosmopolitan figure who was a splendid representative of Iceland on the international stage. During her time in office, and ever since, she has been a staunch champion of the Icelandic language and Iceland’s culture and nature, while also placing great importance on a positive relationship between Iceland and outside world. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir celebrated her 90th birthday in April 2020, and June will mark the 40th anniversary of her election to the presidency. Here at the National Museum we mark this historic year with an exhibition displaying a selection of photographs from President Vigdís' time in office.

We express to her our sincere good wishes on the occasion.
