Minjar og saga (Heritage & History), a friend association of the National Museum, has been operating since 1988. Its aim is to strengthen the Museum’s activities in various ways and to raise awareness of the importance of the nation’s main cultural and historical museum being well managed.

The main tasks of the Friends of the Museum Society are to acquire significant artifacts for the National Museum that are best preserved in the museum due to their cultural and historical value.

Additionally, Minjar og saga provides funding for special research projects as needed.

The society organizes lectures on antiquities and other national treasures. It has also arranged guided tours to important cultural and historical sites. The annual membership fee is 3.000 ISK

Stefán Einar Stefánsson, Margrét Hallgrímsdóttir, Stefán Árni Auðólfsson, Kristján Garðarsson, and Svanhvít Friðriksdóttir serve on the board of Minjar og Saga. Sverrir Kristinsson and Gunnhildur Ásta Guðmundsdóttir serve on the supervisory board.
