Guided tour: Runes – The Evolution of a Writing System [Icelandic]

The National Museum of Iceland offers expert-led guided tours every Sunday. On the last Sunday of each month, the tour is conducted in a foreign language.

Runic writing continued to thrive in carved inscriptions alongside the Latin alphabet for centuries, but was eventually transformed under the latter’s influence.

On Sunday, 13 September at 2 p.m., Elís Þór Traustason will lead visitors on a journey through the history of runes at the National Museum of Iceland. The tour will begin with a brief account of the development of the runic alphabet from the settlement of Iceland to the Reformation, followed by a closer look at a selection of runic inscriptions in the museum’s permanent exhibition.

The tour is included with museum admission.
