Nanna Bisp Büchert has made a name for herself in Danish photography. Some of her work references Iceland, but none so powerfully as Family Photos with a Difference.

The focus of this photographic series is letters written to a mother in Iceland by her daughter in Denmark, in the first half of the 20th century. The letter-writer was the photographer's mother. The theme of the photographs is the letters, and unusual arrangements and stagings relating to them. Family photos are juxtaposed with various small objects and dried plants, to weave a lyrical family garland. The memorial significance of the photographs is presented in a highly personal, refined manner. Beneath the surface lies a tragic family history of the transience of life.
