Opens on the First Day of Summer

In 2022, the National Museum of Iceland received Helgi Helgason's (1848–1922). Helgi was a pioneer of brass band music in Iceland. He studied trumpet playing in Copenhagen and returned home after his studies with instruments to form a brass band, including the cornet he personally used and owned for his entire life.

Helgi was also a composer and wrote many well-known songs. One of his most famous is 'Öxar við ána,' set to lyrics by Steingrímur Thorsteinsson. The song premiered at Öxarárfoss during the 1885 Þingvellir assembly, where Helgi played the cornet on that occasion. Now, visitors to the National Museum of Iceland can see the cornet up close.

The exhibition opens on the First Day of Summer. On the same day, the Hafnarfjörður Music School Brass Band will delight visitors with brass music from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM as part of the museum's summer celebration.
