Reykholtskirkja church was built from 1886-1887 by Ingólfur Guðmundsson. The design of the church may have been strongly influenced by the Dómkirkjan cathedral in Reykjavík.

Guðmundur Helgason, a priest in Reykholt, played a leading role in having the church built. The church was built between 1886 and 1887 by Ingólfur Guðmundsson and consecrated on July 31st, 1887. The congregation took over the church in 1895.

The architectural style of the church bears strong influences from Dómkirkjan, Reykjavík's Cathedral. Initially, the church was clad with corrugated iron on the outside due to its leakiness, but later, around the mid-20th century, its appearance was significantly altered. This included the installation of new windows, arched from above, among other changes.

The church was acquired by the National Museum of Iceland in 2001, leading to extensive renovations. These renovations have aimed to preserve the church's original appearance.

Guests are welcome at their own responsibility. Please take care of the house and surroundings when visiting.
