Editorial series of the National Museum of Iceland, Minjastofnun Íslands, Biskupsstofa and Hið íslenska bókmenntafélag

The National Museum is publishing an essay on the churches of Iceland together with the Ministry of Heritage of Iceland and the Bishops' Office in cooperation with the Icelandic Literary Society. The partnership began in 2000. The National Museum of Iceland represents the National Museum of Iceland on the editorial board. The contribution of the National Museum includes the coverage of church sites, churches, including all churches in the possession of the National Museum's house collection, cemeteries in all churches and the registration of primary sources. The museum's experts are among the authors of articles in the series and have written about church sites, churches, and cemeteries.

The National Museum presents images from the collections of the National Museum of Iceland's National Museum of Photography. National Museum photographer Ívar Brynjólfsson takes care of the new photographs for the series, and Ívar's images are a fundamental element in the publication of the books.

With the publication of the manuscript, a comprehensive picture of the individual cultural heritage has been obtained, and the project has led to a detailed inventory and discussion that will become the basis of national heritage preservation, use and scholarly discussion. The final volume of the series was published in 2018 and will therefore be made for a festive exhibition at the National Museum of Iceland on pacified churches and cemeteries.
