The church represents one of the oldest types of Icelandic timber churches, with its vault in the choir influenced by Reykjavík's Cathedral. It boasts among the oldest such vaults in Icelandic timber churches.

It was constructed by Sigfús Guðmundsson from Ytri-Tjörn in Eyjafjörður, a prolificchurch builder in the South. He crafted, among others, the church in Hruna. The altar, altarpiece, and pulpit were carved and painted by Ófeigur Jónsson from Heiðabær.

In 1987, the church was given to the National Museum of Iceland.

The oldest written record of Tungufellskirkja dates to around 1200 AD in the church register, and during the Middle Ages, the church was dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle.

Guests are welcome at their own responsibility. Please take care of the house and surroundings when visiting.
